The BA GUA – the principal reference symbol

The Ba Gua is an eight sided symbol that corresponds to the eight magnetic directions of the compass. The south is always placed at the top, unlike with a conventional compass. However, the north sector of the Ba Gua will still be magnetic north whether you are in the northern or southern hemisphere.

The division of the eight sided symbol, apart from the eight magnetic directions, has a Tai Chi in the middle that represents Earth. This division is called the Nine Palaces and the energies that exist in these nine palaces interact with each other. Their effect is felt by those who reside within. Interpreting the interactions of these energies is complex and involves the knowledge of various formulae.

Each direction of the Ba Gua is governed by a trigram (Gua) and each trigram relates to a season, an element, a shape, colour and life aspiration. Understanding these various attributes represented in each sector of the Ba Gua will aid us tremendously in the analysis of the Feng Shui of a site, home or office. Nature’s workings depend upon a system of fine balances among processes that may assist, hinder or block one another according to the relative strength of each in a given situation.

Read the piece written on the Trigrams and it will give you a further understanding as to how the Ba Gua is referred to as the Reference Map in Feng Shui. Many Masters have created their own Luo Pan (Chinese Feng Shui Compass) with the same principle as the Ba Gua where all formulae and information are recorded within each ring and segment of the compass for easy reference during a consultation. See Luo Pan for more information.
