The Luo-Shu Square

The Lo Shu Square is a three by three grid where nine numbers are arranged in such a way that the three numbers added together from any given lines, vertical, horizontal or diagonal always give the result fifteen. This is the same number of days required for a cycle of a new moon to a full moon.

Some of the most powerful Feng Shui formulae are closely related to the mysterious secrets of the Luo Shu Square such as Xuan Kong and Nine Star Ki to name but two. Whichever formulae are used in an analysis, none deviates from the fundamental principles and rules of Feng Shui.

The Gua numbers (also known as stars) within the Luo Shu have nothing to do with numerology. These numbers are used merely to interpret the essence and elemental properties of the different qi and are associated with the Eight root trigrams that make up the sixty four hexagrams of the Yi-Ching. For instance, #1 White is named Tan Lang and its elemental property is water.

The Luo Shu Map above shows the Gua numbers in their original positions (also known as palaces) within the map. However, this is a Later Heaven Arrangement and, as such, the gua numbers do not stay in one position in a permanent state of stillness. These numbers move  in a particular manner expressing time and movement on earth.

The evaluation of whether or not to capitalise on the quality and nature of a certain number star depends greatly on its timeliness at a given period in time and this we will have to leave to another article on Flying Stars.

The names and elements of the nine stars of the Lo Shu square are:
